Indian tech workers prioritise innovation over pay

Amadeus has released a study revealing significant trends among Indian technology professionals concerning career adaptability and workplace priorities.

The study, conducted in collaboration with Opinium Research, indicates that nearly 49% of tech professionals in India anticipate pivoting their career paths at least three times to adapt to rapid technological changes. Furthermore, over 53% are considering changing jobs within the next five years.

There is a noticeable shift towards valuing innovation and purpose over traditional compensation. The survey showed that 63% of respondents identified innovation as their top criterion when choosing new employment opportunities. Additionally, a quarter of the tech workforce expressed their willingness to accept a pay cut in exchange for roles at companies known for leadership and innovation.

The importance of equitable workplaces emerged as a critical consideration, with a substantial 91% of tech professionals prioritising it when selecting their employers. Companies fostering inclusivity are believed to enhance innovation and collaboration, ultimately leading to better business outcomes.

While satisfaction with current workplace initiatives remains high—70% endorse mental health support and 68% appreciate work-life balance offerings—there is still a demand for further changes. Professionals are calling for more investment in innovation, professional growth, and flexibility to retain top talent.

Mani Ganeshan, Senior Vice President - Head APAC Engineering and Amadeus Labs India, commented on these findings, "We are witnessing a profound shift in the world of work. The days when salary alone could attract and retain top talent are rapidly fading. Today's tech professionals are demanding more—purpose, innovation, and continuous learning. Companies must now create ecosystems where employees are empowered to grow, experiment, and challenge the status quo. It's no longer about offering just competitive compensation; the future belongs to organizations that invest in their people, foster inclusivity, and provide the flexibility to thrive. Those who embrace this change will not only retain talent but will also lead the industry into its next evolution."

Flexibility has become a significant factor in job satisfaction, with nearly half of the respondents indicating that flexible working options are essential for their decision-making. The preference for remote work, adjustable hours, or hybrid models suggests that flexibility is now a core expectation rather than an additional benefit.

Career progression remains vital, as 51% of tech professionals seek clear and structured career development within their organisations. The combination of flexibility and visible career growth opportunities underlines the new expectations from employers.

The Opinium Research study surveyed 2,200 technology professionals from eight different markets, including India, and targeted a range of technology professions across various age groups. The statistics cited pertain specifically to Indian respondents.
