Volkswagen partners with AirConsole for in-car gaming experience
Volkswagen has announced a new partnership with the gaming platform AirConsole to implement an in-car gaming experience in its vehicles. The collaboration aims to integrate AirConsole's gaming platform across various Volkswagen models, including the ID.7 Tourer, ID.5, ID.4, and ID.3 lines, as well as the latest versions of the Passat, Tiguan, Golf, and Golf Estate.
The AirConsole platform is expected to offer entertainment options for drivers and passengers, particularly useful during breaks or while charging electric vehicles. The games will be accessible through the vehicle's infotainment display, which will function as a gaming console, while smartphones will serve as controllers. This feature transforms the traditional in-car experience into an interactive, multi-player environment.
Volkswagen plans to debut AirConsole in the first European markets by mid-September 2024. By the end of the year, the car maker intends to expand the game catalogue and availability to additional European countries.
"The in-car gaming experience allows players to use their smartphone as a controller, making the connection between the smartphone and the vehicle seamless with a QR code scan on the display screen," stated the partnership announcement. The AirConsole platform will operate with multiple players simultaneously, enabling both front and rear passengers to participate. However, gameplay is only possible when the vehicle is stationary and in park mode.
This unique addition to Volkswagen's infotainment system is designed to provide a social gaming experience, similar to using a home gaming console with traditional controllers. The games will be integrated into the vehicle's Active Info Display, and the smartphone's use as a controller ensures ease of setup and play. As per the announcement, the platform aims to support both solo and group play, catering to a wide range of gaming preferences.
The implementation of AirConsole marks a notable step toward digital innovation in car entertainment for Volkswagen. This move is a part of the automotive company's broader strategy to enhance the driving and passenger experience through advanced digital solutions.
The future phases of this partnership indicate an expanding gaming library, offering passengers more gaming options over time. Volkswagen's commitment to continuously improving its digital services aligns with its overall goal of modernising the driving experience.
